Viva el Betis
By: wan | July 29th, 2008
Welcome to the latest addition to the burgeoning family of blogs focusing on the La Liga. It may come as a major surprise to learn that this is a blog that is written and maintained by a person that is not a full fledged Betis fan…
Truth be told, a more accurate description of me would be a Betis-fan-in-the-making. So if it is instant results or news that you are looking for, you may be better off reading some other sites. But if you want to share in the stories and see how a person gets inculcated into the culture and develops a passion for a football club over time, to get involved in the trials and tribulations of what it means to follow a team, then you have come to the right place.
It is not as if I am starting from stratch; after all I knew about Betis from a long way back and was a great admirer of the team that made it to the Champions League in 2005-06 as well as the likes of Assuncao, Joaquin and Edu. In particular, it was the passion and fervour of the fans that impressed me the most and I often wondered what it was that inspired such following and feelings for a team that isn’t really a considered to be a top club in Europe…
I am about to embark on a journey to find out exactly what that magic ingredient is and I am glad to have you along for the ride… if there are any Betis fans out there, I would love to hear from you and swap stories. Already in the days that I decided to pin my flag on the Betis post, I have been generating a lot of thoughts and ideas which I would love to share with one and all…so stay tuned over the next few days!

i came to like betis because of football manager…
whenever I manage them it only is a while before I get them to be one of the top Spanish teams, especially with the quality of players they have. I just don’t understand why they underachieve SOOO much in the league…
Juanito is a kick ass defender, Melli is very good too, edu is a very good attacker as well as Sobis… they have had a very strong team for some time now and I don’t understand how Sevilla is a better team than Betis

Welcome! And I speak from experience- writing a blog really does make you become invested in the team. When I started writing my Hertha blog I was in your position, and now I’m tearing my hair out over their transfers…

Welcome aboard Wan. Any insight into De Lopera’s current corruption investigation? Is he really going to sell the club?

Betis fan since about 1988, through the few ups and the many downs. About freaking time The Offside got a Betis page! (Truth be told, I go to Spain for most of my Betis information; but it’s certainly nice to have an added English site.) I look forward to posting away as Betis lead us on another roller-coaster ride through La Liga (i.e. playing up to the big boys and playing down to the worst sides).
You’re learning about Betis, eh? Know this: they represent life and life in Sevilla from traditionally working class roots; they represent a passion that you won’t get from you many (most?) fans at your bandwagon sides like Real Madrid or Chelsea or pick-another; Sevilla’s recent success is, well, recent, they’re not a magical club and, by the way, you must loathe them with all your body and soul
; and, nobody likes El Duende DeLopera.!Viva el Betis aunque pierda!
Take care.
